Company Overview
We have spent an enormous amount of time experimenting with and developing techniques to push our metal leaf frames closer to the look and feel of a water gilded frames. We have received great response from a niche of clients looking for frames less bland than the average metal leaf frame, but not having the margin for them to justify the cost of a water gilded frame. The difference between metal leaf and real gold frames are the bole base coat, leaf and leafing techniques, and price. There is no difference in the construction.
An important part of our operation is the milling of most frame profiles in house. This allows us a faster turn around since moldings are always in stock. As a result, we can offer virtually any profile, including our own designs with the freedom to adjust rabbet depth and width as needed. We also encourage artists to design profiles that they feel would be appropriate for their art.
Company Background
Hackman Frames started as a small, one man operation in New York city making silk mats and one -of-a-kind picture frames. In 1992 we moved to Columbus,Ohio and setup shop in a garage and basement, making our own moldings and water gilding in 22k.By 1994 our frames and services caught on here in Columbus.We moved to a commercial location and hired a gilder/ finisher and full time woodworker. We put our first catalog out that year and by word of mouth started growing. By 1996 we were up to 6 full-time employees, doubled our floor space to 2400 sq. ft, and were selling frames all over the country. We were also very busy locally making silk mats and fitting artwork. By 1999 we were out of shop space and moved to a building giving us 14,000 sq.ft. We put our first advertisement in American Art Review and sent out over 300 catalogs. Today, with an even higher team of craftspeople and upgraded equipment in our shop, we have been able to increase our production significantly.
